now I know how you will all understand this when I say, those of us that have shops that sell vintage treasures are never going to be millionares, thats not why we have them, its the find, the fun, and hopefully we make some money so we can keep hunting..lol... So, I found lots of little treasures and a good new friend...ok, here's where my question comes...
while we were talking I told her about my shop and how I sell online and at a little store, there were some other shoppers and she was letting this one couple look at some silverware she had in the house, they had been there before and had asked if she had some, (I also now this couple and like them) well she asked me what she sould sell them for? So I told her the truth, she had really old sterling silver, that was marked with the date 1840, they of course had a pile and they were not very happy with me for telling her how much they were worth, lets just say if looks could kill, I would be a goner!!!
she went outside to help someone and the wife say's to me "we are going to make her a good offer", I replied "I know, but she asked me and I am not going to lie, and its to help her family"
she replies, "well I already donated to her family at the church"
hmmmmm, I don't feel that makes it right to take advantage of someone.
so what would you of done, told the truth, or nothing and let them take it?
Stefanie....you did the right thing!! Taking advantage of someone is not how life is supposed to work. I am happy that you did what you did!! I knew there was a reason I liked you!!
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous weekend.
xxoo Valarie
Hi Stefanie, Of course you you should tell the truth, who would tke advantage of someone on a normal day? let alone an older woman in need! Truth always wins, and I love that you stood up for her:-)
ReplyDeleteHave a Great Sunday!
Bella
You did the absolute right thing!! I always go with the truth even if it hurts!
ReplyDeleteTold the truth! You did the right thing!! I would want someone to help me and be honest with me and she asked you!! Good for you! They should not have been angry IF they were going to be fair with her. God Bless you for being there!
ReplyDeleteOf course you did the right thing, she asked and you told. Even if she did not ask what it was worth I might have told under the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteCarol
HELLO STEPANIE,
ReplyDeleteI FEEL YOU DID THE RIGHT THING, THE SWEET OLD LADY ASK YOU AND YOU GAVE HER YOUR HONESTY, SOME PEOPLE COULD BE SO UNKIND TO THE ELDERLY AND TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM, SO DON'T FEEL BAD YOU DID THE LADY A KINDNESS :) AND TO ME THATS PRICELESS :)
HAVE A GREAT SUNDAY!!
HUGLETS~XOX~MARI
Wow. The nerve of some people. I would have absolutely have told the lady the truth if she asked. I am also SURE they were going to offer a real fair price considering the dirty looks she shot you for telling that poor woman. If she was planning to be fair why would she care if you told her in the first place? Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteStefanie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. Yes the rosemary wreath should look as good dry as fresh. I would recommend wearing a vinyl/disposable glove when doing this though my hands were irritated by the rosemary plant's oil.
Sherry
I would have done exactly what you did. She asked you because you have the knowledge she doesn't have and she valued and trusted your opinion. How could you not tell the truth...your reputation was also on the line.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you for speaking up and taking the heat of the cold stare! It sounds like the money will be much needed and well used by the lady and her family.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you did the right thing!! I just don't understand this world anymore. How anyone could take advantage of little old lady is beyond me!! You are such a good person to tell that sweet lady the worth of her silver. Those other people should be ashamed of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think you did the right thing and you should be proud of yourself!!

Janie
Told the truth of course, that dear little old lady was trying to do some good, why should anyone want to take advantage of her for their own benefit, shame on them, you did the right thing!! You are a good person to be so honest! Happy Sunday! and Pink Saturday yesterday! Marilou
ReplyDeleteYou did the absolute right thing. Honesty is always best and this woman was trying to raise money for something important.

Claudia
Stefanie you did the right thing and will be able to sleep at nite!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like those were the type of people who would have bragged later about how they took advantage of a little old lady and got the silver at a cheap price. Whether the grandmother was selling her treasures for a worthy cause or just a little pin money, she deserves a fair price. You did the right thing of course! Shame on that couple!
ReplyDeleteYOU did the right thing!! They were going to take advantage plain and simple. Since they brought up church I'd ask them if they think God would be proud of them. Anyone who tries to con a sweet little old lady trying to help her family should be ASHAMED!!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!
ReplyDeleteStephanie, you went with your first insticts, and they were correct. There is no excuse for attempting to take advantage of someone else, regardless of the issue. Give yourself a pat on the back, my dear.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Sunday
Maureen
Hi Stefanie,
ReplyDeleteYou absolutely did the right thing by telling her the real value of her silver. And, shame on that couple for trying to take advantage of a sweet older lady trying to help her granddaughter.
You are such a sweetie for listening to her sad story and trying to help.
big hugs to you.
Sissie
You did the right thing!! You never know when your responses are observed by others and the impact your words will have on them. You will have no problem going back to the little ladies' house with the knowledge you treated her right.
ReplyDeleteHave a God Filled Day
Shirley
Hi Stefanie,
ReplyDeleteI just had to let you know that you did the right thing. The truth always is way better any day. Sound to me that they had wrong motives anyway.
Lorena
I think you definitely did the right thing. Their donation to through the church has nothing to do with their purchase that day. Taking advantage of an elderly person is as low as you can go. Did she end up buying the sterling silver? She is blessed to have you as a new friend!
ReplyDeleteDenise
You did the right thing for sure! And for that woman to say she already donated....does she like a little "whine" with her meals? Those kinds of manipulative people turn me off. Shame on her.
ReplyDeleteGood for you!!
Hugs!! Diane
I think you did exactly the right thing in telling her their value. Good for you!!
ReplyDeleteI am quite sure that you did the right thing by being honest! I don't understand people who take advantage of other people, and especially advantage of the elderly people.. Honesty IS the best policy in my book!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
~Lynn
Hi Stefanie! I guess those people showed their true colors. Denise is absolutely correct, what does their church donation have to do with anything? That actually made them look so much worse. Like that makes it ok to take advantage of her? Unbelievable, especially in her situation. You certainly did the right thing and can have a clear conscience. Hopefully those people will recognize what they did and apologize. I will pray for her granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Missy
It seems like you were placed in the right place, at precisely the right time, to protect that sweet olde lady from Opportunists. You absolutely, positively, made the RIGHT decision! We're all proud of you! :) mercedes
ReplyDeleteYou so did the right thing! I would have done it in a heart beat because I have this thing about people taking advantage of others especially those in need like this lady. Glad you were there at the right time.
ReplyDeleteThose people should be ashamed but I have a friend just like that...it does not bother her as long as she gets the good deal...drives me crazy
Love
Maggie
You, of course, did the right thing. They know what they were doing and you have given them something to think about. What ended up happening?
ReplyDeleteYou so did the right thing. Helping out someone in need is always the right thing.
ReplyDeleteA lovely old lady, selling her own stuff to help her SICK great grand daughter asks you a fair question..............their is only one answer. The truth.
ReplyDeleteIf the couple is really that religious they would never wanna take advantage of "thy neighbour".
Hugs,
Lisette
You did the correct thing...I hope this does not seem insultive...but...you mentioned these people were "NICE".... "NOT"... this person was easing their evil ways by saying they gave towards the cause at the church...so?..obviousely the donations were not adequate and this dear soul needed too invest more to the cause of her great-grandaughter...whom she dearly must loves. She allowed total strangers into her home who were making great strides to rip her off!!! This dear soul needed someone like you to be her knight in shining armour..too bad you could not have overseen her all her sales for the day because it was obviouse she was underpricing some very very valuable stuff. She might as well have taken it and put it too the curb for free...fortunately you came along at the right time and those people got their hands caught in the cookie jar....too bad for them and good for you and your dear soul. It's a sad sad world that people would take advantage of the elderly sweet like that. You have earned a gold star friend!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie,
ReplyDeleteYou absoutley did the right thing. Yeah, sure they were going to give her a good deal, that's why she gave you a dirty look. The little lady was blessed to have you there. Good for you!
Debbie
YOU GO GIRL!
ReplyDeleteThe heck with those other people. You followed your heart - which is what any good CHRISTIAN would do! And not just at Church!
I'm glad. And I'm really glad you shared this.
HAGD! Karen
I agree ~ you did the right thing. I find it terrible when people take advantage of the elderly as I find most of them do not know the value of their treasures. Thanks so much for stopping over my way ~ I never got to them this past week-end but hope to have them done soon.
